Chairman of the 22nd Academic Meeting of the Japanese Hernia Society
Hiroshi Hirukawa MD
Vice Director, Chief Surgeon, Department of Surgery Tachikawa General Hospital

Message from the President

From May 24 to 25, 2024, the 22nd Annual Congress of the Japan Hernia Society will take place in Niigata Prefecture.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the officers of the Japan Hernia Society and to all the members of the society for the wonderful opportunity extended to me.
I have chosen the theme of this congress as "Pursuing Japan Quality: The Hows and Whys."
I intend to establish this congress as an attractive platform dedicated to exploring new methodologies and paradigms in hernia care, drawing upon the evidence and methodologies of high-quality hernia care that have been developed in Japan.
"In the field of healthcare, innovative technologies such as surgical assistance and education using artificial intelligence (AI), as well as robotic surgery, are rapidly emerging.
And there is a growing demand for more efficient and higher quality medical care utilizing these technologies.
In this congress, we also aim to share and discuss the methodologies and perspectives on how these new technologies can be effectively utilized in the comprehensive management of abdominal wall hernia.
The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic is finally showing signs of coming to an end. While it has been said that the pandemic has reduced human connections, it can also be argued that the world has become smaller because of the proliferation of online communication and easy access to global information through social media.
Contrary to the perception that people are less connected to each other, the world is actually becoming more interconnected.
Now is the opportune moment to incorporate global information on hernia management and to communicate the concept of "Japan Quality" in hernia management to the world, taking into account the changes in global communication.
The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Japan Hernia Society will be held for the first time in a city on the Japan Sea side.
On May 23, Dr. Nobuhiko Okamoto, Director of Surgery at Ageo Central General Hospital, will oversee the 20th Forum of the Japanese Surgical Association of Endoscopic Surgery for Groin Hernias. I have named this week "TOKIMEKI NIIGATA HERNIA WEEK."
We, all staff are diligently preparing various elements to deliver a 'TOKIMEKI' experience to all of you during this remarkable occasion in Niigata and look forward to meeting each and every one of you.
Why not enjoy Niigata's beautiful scenery, delicious food, and sake while building strong relationships with other hernia lovers from around the world?
